Ask any tech on our routes what they run into around Austin and the same names keep coming up. Whether you own a home in Cedar Park or run a restaurant off South Congress, the pest pressure here is real and it is year-round. Here are the ten pests we find most often in Austin homes and businesses, what each one looks like, and why it earns a spot on this list.

PestHow to spot itWhy it matters

Bed bugs are the hitchhikers of the group. These small, reddish-brown insects feed on human blood, do their work at night, and spend the day tucked into cracks and crevices in furniture, bedding, floors, and walls. By the time you see one in daylight, the population is usually well established.

Cockroaches can survive conditions that would starve out almost anything else. They slip into buildings through small cracks and gaps, and once inside they track disease-causing pathogens across the surfaces where you prepare and store food. For a business, one sighting in front of a customer can undo years of good reviews.

Ants live in nearly every environment Central Texas offers, and a few species go beyond nuisance. Carpenter-type ants tunnel through wood and can damage insulation as they expand. If you keep wiping up trails and they keep coming back, the colony is somewhere you cannot see. Our post on getting rid of ants on your Austin property covers where to look.

Spiders are predators that actually help thin out roaches and flies, but they lose their charm indoors. Most Austin spiders are harmless, though a disturbed spider can bite and inject venom, and a few local species make that a genuine medical concern. Activity peaks through the warm months.

Mosquitoes may be the most prolific pest in Austin. They breed in standing water, sometimes in something as small as a bottle cap, and they can transmit dangerous diseases including West Nile virus and Zika virus. A property with clogged gutters or a forgotten kiddie pool is an open invitation.

Fleas are parasites that feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals, which around here usually means the family dog first and the family second. The itching is miserable for pets and people alike, and an infestation can persist in carpet and bedding long after the pet has been treated.

Wasps are social insects that build nests around structures, under eaves, in trees, and inside wall voids. Stings are painful for people and pets, and a colony defends its nest aggressively when disturbed. Knocking a nest down with a broom is a plan that goes wrong fast; our guide on how dangerous Austin wasps are explains why.

House mice come indoors looking for food and shelter, especially when the weather turns. They bring disease into a building, carry fleas in with them, and contaminate every food source they reach. A mouse problem in a commercial kitchen is a health-inspection problem waiting to happen.

Silverfish are small, silver-gray insects that live in damp corners of a building and feed on organic materials like paper, leather, and glue. They work slowly, but give them time in a storage room or archive and the damage adds up.

Stored product pests round out the list: weevils, beetles, moths, and mites that feed on grains and other stored foods. They contaminate what they infest, chew through packaging, and reproduce quickly, which is why one overlooked bag of flour can seed an entire pantry.
