10 Common Pests Found In Austin Homes And Businesses
The ten pests our techs find most often across Austin, what each looks like, and why it earns a spot on the list.
Read post →Half of pest control is knowing what you are looking at. The treatment for a fire ant mound has nothing in common with the treatment for silverfish, so a correct ID up front saves time, money, and a second service call. These are seven pests every Austin resident should be able to recognize, with the field marks that give each one away.
| Pest | The giveaway |
|---|---|
| Fire ants | Red bodies, dark heads, loose dirt mounds in the yard |
| Spiders | Webs plus brown or black bodies; recluse and widow need respect |
| Fleas | Tiny black bodies, long legs, big jumps, itchy pets |
| Wasps | Black and yellow stripes, nests in trees and under eaves |
| Stink bugs | Shield-shaped body, green to brown, strong odor when disturbed |
| Rodents | Long tails, scavenging at night, droppings and gnaw marks |
| Silverfish | Silvery gray, fish-like shape, quick darting movement |
Fire ants announce themselves before you ever see one up close. The loose, fluffy dirt mounds that appear in lawns after rain are usually theirs, and the ants themselves are easy to confirm: red bodies with darker heads, and a fast, aggressive response when the mound is disturbed. If mounds are showing up in your yard, our post on why fire ants pick certain Austin properties explains what is drawing them in.
Austin hosts a long list of spider species, and most are harmless web-builders. The two worth learning by sight are the brown recluse and the black widow. Look for the web first, then the body: brown or black coloring, and in the widow’s case a glossy finish. When in doubt, do not handle it, photograph it. Our spider field guide covers the ID marks for both species in detail.
Fleas are small parasites that live on blood, and they ride into homes on pets or wait in grass and soil outside. They are hard to spot individually, so look for the pattern: tiny black bodies with long legs, sudden jumps, and a dog or cat that cannot stop scratching. The flea and tick guide covers what to check on your pets and around the yard.
The black and yellow stripes are the classic warning colors, but the nest is often what you find first. Wasps tuck their papery nests into trees, under eaves, and into other sheltered spots around a structure. Give a nest distance; wasps defend it in numbers.
Stink bugs are the shield-shaped ones, and the shape is the fastest way to confirm the ID. Color runs from green through brown to reddish-brown depending on the species and season. Crush one or startle it and you get the strong odor that earned the name, which is also the best reason to escort them out gently.
Rats and mice give themselves away even when you never see them: droppings along walls, gnaw marks on packaging, and scavenging sounds after dark. When you do get a look, the long tail and the fur color help separate the species. Either way, rodents in the house are a now problem, not a later problem; our guide to rats in Austin covers what comes next.
Silverfish are scaly, silvery gray insects that favor damp, dark spaces like closets, basements, and bathroom cabinets. The movement is the tell: a quick, wriggling dart that looks exactly like a fish swimming across your floor. Spot that once and you will never misidentify one again.
Learn these seven and you can tell a shrug from a same-week problem, and describe what you are seeing accurately when you call for help.
