Austin’s Fire Ant Problem

Fire ant mound in a Central Texas yard

Every Austin yard has ants. Most are a nuisance at worst. One species is a genuine hazard to your family and pets, and it happens to be the one Central Texas grows best: the fire ant.

The Types Of Ants In Austin

Wondering which of the ants in your yard actually poses a threat? Austin is home to several common species, including carpenter ants, sugar ants, acrobat ants, and fire ants. Of that lineup, fire ants are the most dangerous to people, and the reason is their sting.

If you have ever been stung, you know it is not a subtle experience. A single fire ant can sting multiple times, leaving a cluster of painful welts, and a disturbed mound does not send one ant. For anyone allergic to fire ant venom, stings are a medical emergency: get medical attention immediately. In short, fire ants are well past nuisance status, and a yard full of them should be dealt with promptly. Our post on why fire ants show up on Austin properties covers what attracts them in the first place.

The Problems Fire Ants Can Cause On Your Austin Property

The danger does not stay in the yard. Fire ants will move indoors, and once inside they can establish colonies in wall voids, where they are far harder to reach and remove than a mound in the open lawn.

The bigger risk is still to people and pets. Beyond ordinary sting pain, a severe allergic reaction to fire ant venom can escalate to anaphylaxis, which needs urgent medical care. Pets are especially prone to blundering into mounds nose-first; our guide to keeping pets safe from fire ants covers that side in detail. Between the sting risk outdoors and the possibility of an indoor colony, a fire ant infestation is worth taking seriously the day you notice it.

Easy & Effective Fire Ant Prevention Tips

First, the one thing not to do: do not try to remove a fire ant mound yourself. Disturbing a mound aggravates the colony, which means a real chance of multiple painful stings, and it often causes the colony to split, leaving you with several smaller mounds instead of one. Prevention is the better use of your effort:

  1. Seal your trash. Keep it picked up and under a tight-fitting lid. Fire ants forage for food to carry back to the colony, and open trash is easy pickings.
  2. Cover sugary drinks. Rinse soda cans before they go in the bin, and keep the bin covered.
  3. Clean up after cookouts. Wipe down grills and outdoor eating areas after each use.
  4. Seal the foundation. Walk the exterior and close cracks and gaps with weatherproof caulk.
  5. Tighten doors and windows. Install weather stripping so everything closes to a true seal.
  6. Cap vents and chimneys. Outdoor vents and chimney openings are entry routes too.
  7. Check the utility lines. Inspect where wires, pipes, and AC or HVAC equipment meet the house. Ants use these as highways inside.
  8. Call in help early. If you suspect a fire ant problem, contact Accurate Termite & Pest Control before the mounds multiply.
