Austin’s Best Mouse-Prevention Tips that Every Resident Should Know

House mouse near a wall gap, the kind of entry point Austin mouse prevention targets

Some people are flat-out mortified by mice, caged or not. Others stay calm until one sprints across the living room floor at midnight. Wherever you land on that spectrum, we can agree on the practical part: mice do not belong loose inside your Austin home. These are the prevention tips our techs would hand every resident in our area, starting with the one that matters most.

Address Entry Points Mice Use To Get Inside

Mice get inside through cracks, gaps, and other small openings in a home’s exterior. They find these entry points in and around window and door frames, through damaged screens, through ventilation, near utility piping, and along the foundation. Sealing that route list is the highest-value work in mouse prevention, and it breaks down into five steps:

  1. Caulk the shell. Fill holes, gaps, and cracks in the exterior foundation and around window and door frames with a caulking gun.
  2. Check every door sweep. All exterior doors need sweeps, and the sweeps need to be in good condition, not curled or torn.
  3. Screen the openings you cannot seal. Install wire screens over ventilation openings and gutter outspouts.
  4. Repair damaged screens. A torn window or door screen is a mouse door. Patch or replace it.
  5. Close what is not in use. Keep unscreened windows and doors shut when nobody is coming or going.

If you want the full picture of where they get in, our post on all the ways mice get into Austin homes maps every route.

Make Sure Your Living Areas Are Clean

Nothing suits a mouse better than a dirty house. Keeping things clean and tidy removes both the food and the cover they are after. Even if your home is in decent shape, a periodic deep clean pays off: wash beneath large appliances, behind and under furniture, and in the hard-to-reach spots where crumbs collect unnoticed. Organized living and storage areas help too, because clutter is exactly where adult and baby mice like to hide.

Eliminate Sources Of Moisture Build Up

Mice need something to drink, and most homes offer plenty. Outside, they find rainwater build-up and ornamental pools. Inside, leaky faucets, pipes, and fixtures do the job, along with moisture left standing in sinks and bathtubs. Fix the leaks, keep gutters flowing, drain spots where rainwater collects around the property, and wipe down sinks and tubs after use. A dry house is a far less interesting house.

Keep Up With Your Lawn And Landscaping

Most mouse infestations start in the yard. Tall grass and unkempt greenery tell mice a property is safe to settle around, and woodpiles, leaf piles, and yard debris hand them ready-made shelter. Mow regularly, rake leaves, clear sticks and trash, fill in ground burrows when you find them, and store firewood a good distance from the house. Every hiding spot you remove is one less staging area next to your walls.
