Understanding the Mosquito: A Guide to its Behavior and Habits

Mosquito feeding, the species behind Austin's long and intense mosquito season

Around Austin, mosquitoes are not just the price of a summer evening. They are a genuine public health concern, and our warm, humid climate hands them one of the longest breeding seasons in the country. Understanding how they live is the first step to getting your yard back, so here is the short course.

Understanding Mosquito Behavior and Habits in Central Texas

There are more than 3,500 mosquito species worldwide, and Central Texas hosts several of them. The biology that matters for your property fits in one table:

Mosquito factWhy it matters at your house
Females lay eggs on standing waterA clogged gutter, a birdbath, or a tarp holding rain is a full nursery
Larvae become adults in 1 to 2 weeksWater that stands for a week has already produced mosquitoes
Only females bite; males drink nectarFemales need a blood meal to develop eggs, which is why they hunt you
Most travel only a few miles from where they hatchThe mosquitoes biting you were almost certainly born nearby, often on your own property
Adults live 2 to 3 weeks, some species up to 6 monthsPopulations rebuild fast, so control has to be ongoing, not one-and-done

Austin’s warm temperatures and steady spring and summer rains keep that cycle running at full speed for most of the year. Our mosquito pest library page covers the species you are most likely dealing with.

Why Are Mosquitoes Dangerous, Not Just Annoying?

Measured by the diseases they spread, mosquitoes are the deadliest animal on earth. The local risks:

  • West Nile Virus. The most commonly reported mosquito-borne illness in Texas, with cases in the Austin metro every year.
  • Zika Virus. A particular concern for pregnant women because of the serious birth defects it can cause.
  • Dengue and Chikungunya. Less common but present in Texas, carried by the invasive Aedes aegypti mosquito found in Central Texas.
  • Heartworm in pets. Dogs and cats pick up heartworm larvae through mosquito bites, so mosquito control is animal health too.

And past the disease risk, heavy mosquito pressure simply takes your patio, garden, and evenings away from you. That part is fixable.

Where Do Mosquitoes Breed on Your Property?

Knocking out breeding sites is the highest-value work you can do yourself. The usual suspects:

  • Clogged gutters holding water
  • Birdbaths, fountains, and decorative ponds
  • Tarps, buckets, and containers catching rain
  • Low spots in the lawn that pool after storms
  • Kids’ toys, wheelbarrows, and anything else left right-side-up outside
  • Tree stumps and hollow branches that hold water
  • Flower pots and saucers that drain poorly

A female mosquito can lay eggs in as little as a bottle cap of water. Walk the property after the next rain and you will find breeding sites you never suspected.

What Are the Most Effective Mosquito Control Methods?

Nothing wipes out mosquitoes entirely. What works is layers: remove the breeding water, treat what you cannot remove, and bring in professional treatments for the adults.

  • Eliminate standing water weekly. Eggs can hatch in about seven days, so this is a weekly chore, not a one-time cleanup.
  • Treat water features you cannot drain. Mosquito dunks, which are Bt-based larvicides, kill larvae in ponds and fountains without harming fish or wildlife.
  • Barrier spray treatments. Professional-grade product applied to vegetation, shrubs, and shaded resting areas. A treatment typically holds for 3–4 weeks.
  • Mosquito baiting stations. Stations that draw mosquitoes in with CO2 and eliminate them, serviced monthly for continuous control.
  • Fogging before events. Graduation parties, weddings, Fourth of July cookouts: a fogging treatment knocks the adult population down hard for several days in the treated area.

Accurate Termite & Pest Control runs both recurring monthly mosquito control plans and one-time event treatments across the Austin area, Cedar Park, Leander, Round Rock, and surrounding communities.

Mosquito Prevention Tips for Austin Homeowners

Between service visits, these habits keep the pressure down:

  1. Change birdbath water at least twice a week
  2. Keep gutters clear and draining
  3. Store outdoor containers upside down
  4. Install or repair window and door screens
  5. Run outdoor fans on the patio. Mosquitoes are weak fliers and moving air grounds them
  6. Use EPA-registered repellents with DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus at dawn and dusk, their peak hours

Quick answers

Mosquito control questions, answered

When is mosquito season in Austin?

Activity ramps up in March and April, peaks through summer, and stays strong well into October. Our mild winters mean some activity is possible year-round. Starting treatment in early spring, before populations peak, gets the best results.

How long do professional mosquito treatments last?

Barrier sprays on vegetation and resting areas typically hold for 3 to 4 weeks, which is why monthly treatment is the standard for season-long protection. One-time event treatments are available when you need coverage for a specific date.

Is professional mosquito treatment safe for children and pets?

Yes, when a licensed technician applies it per the label. You will usually just need to keep people and pets off treated areas until the product dries, about 30 minutes. Tell your provider about pets, including fish ponds, before treatment so the right products get selected.

Do mosquito control treatments affect bees or other beneficial insects?

Barrier treatments target the shaded vegetation where mosquitoes rest, not the flowering plants where pollinators work, and they are typically scheduled early morning or evening when bees are less active. If pollinators are a concern on your property, ask your technician about timing and product choices.

Does Accurate Termite & Pest Control offer mosquito control outside of Austin?

Yes. We cover the greater Austin metro including Cedar Park, Leander, Lago Vista, Round Rock, Liberty Hill, Georgetown, and surrounding communities. Our service area page has the full list, and the mosquito control page covers the treatment plans.
