How Dangerous Are Wasps In Austin?
How to tell wasps from bees, make your yard less inviting, and handle a nest safely.
Read post →Paper wasps, yellow jackets, hornets, and mud daubers all build around Central Texas homes, and late summer into early fall is when colonies are biggest and most defensive. Wasps can sting repeatedly, and for anyone with a venom allergy a sting is a medical emergency. Don’t knock the nest down yourself. We remove it safely.

What we do
Each species builds differently. Paper wasps hang open umbrella nests under eaves, overhangs, and deck rails. Yellow jackets use old rodent burrows underground or the voids inside your walls. Hornets build enclosed paper globes in trees and shrubs, and mud daubers stick mud tubes to exterior walls, garages, and covered patios.
We find every nest on the property, not just the one you spotted.
We have removed stinging insect nests around Cedar Park, Leander, and Austin for over 25 years, with the protective equipment, professional-grade products, and experience needed to eliminate the colony safely and completely.
Yellow jacket nests in wall voids or underground are the most hazardous to attempt on your own, because you cannot see how big the colony is or where it will pour out. Disturbing any nest without protective gear can set off a swarm response, and a dozen stings is dangerous even without an allergy.
Why it matters
Plenty of stinging insects do real good as pollinators and pest predators. The trouble starts when the nest goes up ten feet from your back door. If you have kids, pets, or anyone with a known venom allergy at home, treat any nest on the property as a problem to solve now, not eventually.

Neighbors first
Reliable, professional, punctual, friendly, worry-free service. My experience with them has never been anything less than that for several years now, and I have absolutely no reason to believe that will change for many years to come. I could not be happier with them.
We’ve had Accurate Pest Control service our property since 2008. They don’t try to sell us anything we don’t need. Our monthly service fee has been consistent and reasonable since 2008. It’s difficult to find a quality company in most home services, but you can count on Accurate Pest Control to take care of your property.
What a great company! I purchased an ant control plan that had a 1 yr warranty for our yard. One month later, new ant mounds in other parts of our yard. I called them and they came out and treated again at no charge. It’s been 2-3 months and no ants. They also treat my house and the chemicals they use aren’t harmful to animals.
I receive quarterly pest treatments and had them out for critters in the attic over the summer as well. Very friendly and helpful service! I felt safe with both men that came to help even though I was home alone. The price is competitive and fair. Would definitely recommend!

Late summer and early fall, when colonies are at their largest and most defensive about the nest. Small, early-season nests in spring are far easier and safer to deal with than established colonies.
We don’t recommend it. Disturbing a nest without protective gear and professional products can set off a swarm, and wasps can sting over and over. Nests in wall voids or underground are the most dangerous, because you cannot see how big the colony is.
For most people a sting means sharp pain, redness, and swelling that fades within hours. For anyone with a venom allergy it can cause anaphylaxis, which is a medical emergency. Multiple stings are dangerous even without an allergy.
Paper wasps favor eaves, overhangs, and deck rails. Yellow jackets use old rodent burrows or wall voids. Hornets build in trees and shrubs or against structures, and mud daubers stick mud tubes to walls, garages, and covered patios.
Check eaves, overhangs, porch ceilings, deck rails, and window frames in early spring, when a nest is golf-ball sized instead of basketball sized. Keep outdoor trash cans sealed and rinsed, cover food and sugary drinks when eating outside, and seal gaps in exterior walls, soffits, and the roofline so yellow jackets and hornets can’t build inside.
