Which Rodent Is in Your Austin House?

Three species do nearly all the damage around Austin, and they split the house between them. Knowing which one you have decides where the traps go and which gaps get sealed first.

Roof rats take the high ground. Lean and athletic, with a tail as long as the body, they climb limbs, vines, and utility lines to the roofline and nest in attics, upper wall voids, and along the eaves. Light, fast scratching overhead after dark is usually a roof rat. They gnaw wiring and rafters once they are up there.

Norway rats hold the low ground. Heavier, with a blunt muzzle and a thick naked tail, they burrow under slabs and along foundations and come in at ground level through garages, crawl spaces, and gaps around pipes. A rat needs a gap of only about three quarters of an inch.

House mice go anywhere. Gray or brown, small and quick, they get through a hole the size of a dime and chew a smaller one bigger. Kitchens, pantries, and garages are where Austin homeowners usually meet them first, and they breed year round indoors.

Cold weather pushes all three toward the house, and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's advice for fall is to close any gap of a quarter inch or wider, seal around water, gas, and electrical penetrations, and get the eaves and vent frames tight.
